What Are Cow Magnets?
Cow magnets, also called cattle magnets or rumen magnets, are magnetic devices administered orally to cattle to help reduce the risk of hardware disease, or traumatic reticuloperitonitis.
After administration, the magnet typically settles in the reticulum, where heavy foreign objects such as nails and pieces of wire are also likely to collect.
The magnet attracts and holds ferromagnetic objects together, reducing the chance that sharp metal pieces will penetrate the reticular wall and cause injury or infection.
Cow magnets are commonly used as a preventive measure in cattle and may also be administered as part of veterinary treatment when a ferromagnetic foreign body is suspected.
