What Are Magnetic and Non-Magnetic Materials?
Magnetic vs. non-magnetic materials are commonly distinguished by how they respond to a magnetic field. Some materials are easily attracted to a magnet, while others show little to no visible response under normal conditions.
In everyday use, magnetic materials usually refer to materials that can be noticeably attracted by an ordinary magnet. Common examples include iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys. Non-magnetic materials, by contrast, often include copper, aluminum, gold, and most plastics, which are not obviously attracted in normal applications.
However, this distinction is not always absolute. Some materials that are generally regarded as non-magnetic can still show a very weak response to a magnetic field, but the effect is often too small to notice without specialized equipment.
