What Are Sintered AlNiCo Magnets?

Sintered AlNiCo magnets are non-rare earth metallic permanent magnets produced by pressing fine metal powder into shape and then sintering it into a solid magnet.

In comparison with cast AlNiCo magnets, sintered AlNiCo magnets are less widely used, but they are especially suitable for small-to-medium sized, thin, light, and special shaped magnets in precision applications.

They are valued for their high dimensional accuracy, reduced need for additional machining, and better material utilization in mass production.

Compared with cast AlNiCo magnets, sintered AlNiCo magnets also show lower composition segregation and more stable magnetic performance in volume manufacturing, especially where dimensional consistency is important.

Manufacturing Process of Sintered AlNiCo Magnets

Sintered AlNiCo magnets are manufactured through powder metallurgy, followed by heat treatment, machining, magnetization, and packaging. Among these steps, pressing, sintering, and heat treatment play key roles in determining the final magnetic properties.

Magnetic Properties of Sintered AlNiCo Magnets

Sintered AlNiCo magnets are available in a range of grades with different magnetic characteristics. In practical applications, the selection of grade is closely related to the required magnetic output, coercivity, operating temperature, and magnet design.

Grade of Sintered AlNiCo Magnets

Sintered AlNiCo magnets are commonly identified by their MMPA grade names, such as AlNiCo 2, AlNiCo 3, AlNiCo 5, AlNiCo 6, and AlNiCo 8. In practical applications, these grades differ mainly in magnetic output, cobalt content, and coercivity.

Lower grades such as AlNiCo 2, AlNiCo 3, and AlNiCo 4 are unoriented and isotropic, so their magnetic output is relatively low. Anisotropic grades such as AlNiCo 5, AlNiCo 6, AlNiCo 8, and AlNiCo 9 are designed to provide higher magnetic performance in a preferred direction.

In China, sintered AlNiCo magnets are also commonly designated by the FLNG or FLNGT naming system. These grade names are widely used in technical documents and magnetic property charts. The number that follows generally indicates the minimum value of the maximum energy product, while the letter J at the end indicates high coercivity.
