What Are Magnetic Door Catches?

Magnetic door catches are magnetic tools designed to keep doors securely closed using magnetic force. They are also known as magnetic cabinet catches, magnetic door latches, or door magnets.

These catches typically consist of two main parts: a magnetic catch body and a metal striker plate mounted on the opposing surface.

When the door is closed, the magnetic catch attracts the striker plate and holds the door firmly in place without the moving mechanisms used in conventional mechanical latches.

Magnetic door catches have no moving parts and operate quietly with minimal maintenance. They are commonly used in cabinets, wardrobes, furniture, and lightweight doors where a simple and compact closing mechanism is required.

Magnetic Circuit in Magnetic Door Catches

Standard and ultra-thin magnetic door catches can use different magnetic circuit structures. Conventional catches commonly combine ferrite magnets with steel pole pieces, while ultra-thin designs can use Neodymium (NdFeB) magnets together with steel backing components to achieve sufficient holding force within a much thinner profile.

In a conventional ferrite magnetic door catch, the magnet is positioned between two steel pole pieces. These pole pieces provide low-reluctance paths for the magnetic flux and bring the magnetic effect of both poles toward the working side. When the striker plate approaches the catch, it becomes part of the external magnetic circuit and helps produce the required holding force across the small air gap.

Ultra-thin magnetic door catches use a different structure. The Neodymium magnet is normally magnetized through its thickness, with a steel backing piece or housing on the opposite side of the working face. The steel provides a return path for the magnetic flux and directs more of the useful field toward the striker plate. Combined with the higher magnetic performance of Neodymium magnets, this allows the catch body to be made considerably thinner.

Custom Magnetic Door Catches

Magnetic door catches can be customized according to the required dimensions, holding force, installation space, and structural design. Depending on the application, ferrite or Neodymium magnets can be selected together with suitable steel components and striker plates.

For custom projects, the catch body, mounting holes, striker plate dimensions, surface finish, and other structural details can also be adjusted to match the surrounding furniture or equipment.
