Teflon (PTFE) coatings can provide low friction, reduced surface adhesion, and resistance to many chemicals. These properties may help limit residue buildup and make coated magnets easier to clean in suitable operating environments.
The actual protection, however, depends on the complete coating system rather than PTFE alone. Surface preparation, primer selection, film thickness, curing conditions, edge coverage, and adhesion to the underlying magnet all affect coating performance. Corners, holes, sharp edges, and complex geometries may be more difficult to cover uniformly.
PTFE coatings are also comparatively thin and can be damaged by impact, abrasion, repeated contact, or handling during assembly. Local defects, wear, or loss of adhesion may expose the underlying magnet even when most of the surface remains intact. Chemical resistance should therefore be evaluated together with mechanical conditions and the expected service life.
Curing temperature is another important consideration, particularly for temperature-sensitive magnetic materials or grades. The coating process, magnetic material, magnetization sequence, and required magnetic performance should be reviewed together before production. Where coating integrity is critical, finished parts may also require appropriate visual, thickness, adhesion, or continuity inspection.
Custom Teflon (PTFE) coated magnets require the coating system, magnetic material, geometry, and operating conditions to be considered together. Surface preparation, coating thickness, edge coverage, curing temperature, and dimensional tolerances can all affect the finished components.
The magnet material and grade must be compatible with the coating and curing process. Magnetization may be completed before or after coating depending on the magnetic material, component geometry, handling requirements, and process temperature.
Inspection requirements should also be defined according to the intended use. Depending on the project, this may include checks for coating appearance, thickness, adhesion, coverage, dimensions, and magnetic performance.
SDM can evaluate whether Teflon (PTFE) coatings are appropriate for the required environment or whether another coating or PTFE encasement would provide a more suitable solution. Drawings, working media, temperature range, expected wear, cleaning conditions, and required magnetic performance help determine the appropriate construction.
