Ι What Is Isotropic NdFeB Powder?
Bonded magnets are composites of magnetic powder and polymer binders, with the powder’s permanent magnetic properties determining magnet performance. Isotropic bonded Neodymium magnets lead commercial bonded rare earth magnets, accounting for over 80% of the market. Isotropic NdFeB powder is used to produce these magnets.
Unlike powders for sintered Neodymium magnets, which lack sufficient coercivity when crushed from strip-cast alloy ingots or sintered bodies to particle sizes for bonded magnet production, this powder is produced via melt spinning. In an inert gas environment, molten NdFeB alloy is quenched at 105–106 K/s, forming a microcrystalline or amorphous structure with fine (30–50 nm), randomly oriented grains, ensuring isotropy. Subsequent crystallization heat treatment promotes grain growth to 50–200 nm, achieving superior intrinsic coercivity in submicron grains below the Nd2Fe14B single-domain critical size. Notably, isotropic NdFeB powder is unsuitable for producing sintered Neodymium magnets.
