Everlube is a broader family of engineered surface coatings, and not all Everlube products serve the same function. The coating systems used for rare earth magnets are primarily selected as protective barriers rather than for the lubricating properties associated with some other Everlube products.
For magnet applications, Everlube coatings are therefore selected primarily for surface protection rather than lubrication.
Everlube coatings are used on Neodymium magnets when the application requires a different type of protective barrier than conventional metallic finishes can provide. Their value lies in combining corrosion protection, chemical resistance, and coating adhesion while maintaining a relatively thin coating layer.
This makes Everlube coated magnets suitable for applications where the magnet surface may be exposed to moisture, oils, fuels, solvents, or other environmental factors. The coating helps protect the underlying Neodymium magnet while avoiding the need for a thicker protective structure.
Another important advantage is coating adhesion. A properly applied Everlube coating system can maintain a stable bond with the magnet surface during handling, assembly, and service.
Everlube should therefore be considered when a balance of environmental protection, chemical resistance, coating reliability, and design flexibility is required.
Unlike electroplated finishes such as Ni-Cu-Ni or Zn, Everlube coatings are applied as liquid coating systems and then cured to form a continuous protective layer on the magnet surface.
Before coating, the Neodymium magnet surface must be properly prepared to support reliable adhesion. Surface cleanliness and condition are important because contamination or poor preparation can affect how well the coating bonds to the substrate.
Coating thickness and curing conditions are controlled according to the application requirements. Thicker coatings can be produced when needed, but they generally require more material and processing time and may have a greater influence on the final dimensions of the component.
For Neodymium magnets, the curing process must also be compatible with the selected magnet grade and its temperature limitations. Process temperature, coating thickness, and dimensional requirements should therefore be considered together when specifying Everlube coated magnets.
The performance of Everlube coated magnets depends on more than the coating material itself. The condition of the Neodymium magnet surface, the coating process, and the requirements of the final application all influence the reliability of the protective layer.
Surface preparation and coating adhesion are important factors because the coating must maintain a stable bond with the magnet substrate during handling and service. Proper preparation helps reduce defects that could affect coating integrity and long-term protection.
Coating thickness and coverage also influence performance. A consistent coating layer is important for protecting the magnet surface, while excessive thickness may affect dimensions and should be considered during component design.
Magnet geometry should also be evaluated during coating selection. Edges, corners, and complex features may affect coating coverage and durability, making process control especially important for small or precision magnetic components.
Everlube coated magnets are mainly selected for applications where a protective barrier coating with good adhesion and chemical resistance is required. They are useful when the magnet surface needs additional protection from environmental exposure while maintaining a relatively compact coating structure.
Typical applications include industrial magnetic components, automotive systems, electronic devices, and other equipment where magnets may encounter moisture, oils, fuels, solvents, or other contaminants during operation. In these situations, Everlube coatings can provide an alternative surface-treatment approach to conventional metallic finishes.
However, Everlube is not intended to replace every standard magnet coating. The most suitable surface treatment depends on the operating environment, required protection level, dimensional limitations, and cost considerations.
For applications where coating selection is critical, the magnet design, environmental conditions, and performance requirements should be evaluated together to determine the most appropriate surface solution.
SDM supplies custom Everlube coated magnets based on magnet grade, dimensions, coating requirements, and application conditions. Everlube coatings can be specified for Neodymium magnets and magnetic components where chemical resistance, adhesion, and environmental protection are important design considerations.
For custom projects, coating thickness, dimensional requirements, surface condition, masking, and inspection criteria can be reviewed together with the magnet design.
