What Is Electrical Steel?
Electrical steel, also known as silicon steel or lamination steel, is a soft magnetic steel material mainly used in laminated cores for motors, generators, and other electromagnetic devices. By adding silicon to iron, the material achieves higher electrical resistivity, which helps reduce eddy current loss in alternating magnetic fields, while also offering favorable magnetic properties such as relatively high permeability, low hysteresis loss, and low core loss.
Electrical steel is typically supplied in sheet form for lamination. During processing, the sheets are cut into the required shape, stacked together, and insulated from each other to form laminated core structures. This laminated form is essential to its practical use, as it supports efficient magnetic performance in AC applications and makes electrical steel one of the most commonly used soft magnetic materials in motor core design.
